Why Use Silicone?

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past 12-18 months, you will definitely have noticed the introduction of silicone products in all things related to your kitchen.

This is especially true if you go into any large supermarket and head to the kitchen aisle.

There are tons of fancy new silicone products to choose from, and if you're like me, you like to have a look at all of the new gadgets, whenever I'm doing my shopping.

But why?

Why has silicone become such a growing trend in the kitchen and is it here to stay?

Firstly, the supermarkets and their product buyers are clever people. The fact that their shelves are jam-packed with silicone products shows us that there is a demand for it. 

Consumers must be buying it!

I figured it would be very useful if I gave you a simple and easy to understand run down of WHY consumers and thus every supermarket in the UK are going absolutely bananas for silicone - and why you should too.

So firstly, there are a bunch of excellent reasons why you should be using silicone products in your kitchen, but there are also two VERY important advantages you must understand:

  1. Heat resistance. Silicone products are extremely durable and due to the very scientific process used to make them, silicone kitchen and cooking products can withstand heat up to 500f/260c. Which of course is VERY useful in the kitchen. The advantage being that you don't have to worry about them melting when cooking at high temperatures OR when microwaving. On the flip side, silicone products are very effective when frozen, meaning you can freeze them without worrying you'll damage them in anyway.
  2. Stain resistant and non-sticky. Due to the non-porous make up of silicone kitchen products, they are 100% stain resistant meaning they will never discolour. Unlike rubber or wooden products! This also means that silicone products don't harbour microbial odours or any form of bacteria, unlike their traditional counterparts. making them incredibly safe to use when coming in contact with food.
Here is a whole bunch of other very specific reason why you should be using silicone in your kitchen:

Conclusion: Silicone kitchen products are safer, better and all around more advantageous than their traditional counterparts, meaning they're certainly the future when it comes to kitting out your kitchen with the latest gadgets and gizmos. 

I would certainly expect to see a wider range of silicone products on our supermarket shelves over the coming weeks, months and years. 

In fact I imagine they'll become the new standard and benchmark of kitchen and cooking sustainability for years to come.

Silicone is here to stay and I for one, have already replaced 90% of the items in my kitchen with silicone. And you should too.



Be aware of fake imitations. There are masses of cheap and imitation silicone products on the market today and it's very difficult to spot unless you know what to look for. 

Make sure to only purchase silicone products that are classified as non-toxic BPA Free and FDA Approved food grade silicone.
